Fujifilm GFX100 II Launch: Canyoning Shoot with Outex Housing

Fujifilm selects Thibault Poinas & Remi Flament for GFX100 II camera launch, using Outex

How Photographer Thibault Poinas Used Outex to Capture Fujifilm’s GFX100 II in Extreme Canyoning Conditions

Photographer and producer Thibault Poinas was recently commissioned by Fujifilm to create content for the launch of the Fuji GFX100 II to document the camera's capabilities as an imaging tool. Thibault is an adventurer, and chose canyoning as the backdrop for the project.

Photographer, filmmaker, and adventure creative Thibault Poinas has carved his niche capturing striking visual stories in demanding environments where traditional gear often struggles. A commissioned creator for some of the world’s premier imaging brands, Thibault brings together a passion for exploration, scientific curiosity, and visual storytelling in projects that push both his creative and technical limits.

In late 2023, Thibault was selected by Fujifilm to help launch the much-anticipated GFX100 II camera — a next-generation medium format mirrorless camera. Rather than photographing the new camera in a studio, Fujifilm challenged him and collaborator Remi Flament to showcase the camera’s capabilities in a real-world extreme environment: canyoning through cascades, plunging pools, and narrow rock passages.

Adventures in Canyoning — A Test of Gear and Grit

Canyoning combines hiking, swimming, climbing, and rappelling to explore deep gorges and waterfalls. It’s a setting that demands serious resilience from both photographer and equipment. Waterfalls relentlessly spray, rock faces cut and scrape, and unpredictable light conditions range from bright sun to deep shadow. For this type of shoot, typical water protection solutions like action cameras deliver limited image quality and little control — but Thibault needed professional-grade imaging that could fully showcase the GFX100 II’s dynamic range, resolution, and color fidelity.

That’s where Outex waterproof housing systems came into the picture.

Why Thibault Chose Outex for This Extreme Project

Both Thibault and Remi selected Outex housings as the best solution for their canyoning shoot — not just because it kept their gear dry, but because it enhanced the possibilities of what they could capture. Here’s why Outex stood out for this kind of adventure imagery:

✔️ Rugged Protection Meets Optical Excellence
Outex housings use premium optical glass ports that preserve the clarity and resolution of the lens and camera inside. This means photographers don’t compromise on image quality when shooting above and below the waterline — an essential for showcasing a cutting-edge imaging system like Fujifilm’s GFX100 II

✔️ Universal Compatibility
Outex’s modular housings fit virtually any camera system — from DSLRs and mirrorless to medium format and video rigs. This flexibility allowed Thibault and Remi to use their preferred setup for a range of shots without switching systems or investing in multiple underwater housings.

✔️ Modular Design for Real Continue Shooting
For canyoning, gear needs to adapt quickly. Outex’s design accommodates different lenses, lighting accessories, tripods, triggers, tethering systems, and more — all while retaining waterproof security. This modularity gave Thibault the creative freedom to shoot the diverse scenes his assignment demanded.

✔️ Travel-Ready and Lightweight
On a shoot that involves hiking through rugged terrain and swimming in cold rock pools, every ounce matters. Outex housings add almost no bulk or extra weight, enabling the team to stay agile and responsive throughout the canyoning sequence.

Expanding the Creative Toolkit for Adventure Photographers

Thibault’s work on the Fujifilm GFX100 II launch exemplifies a broader trend in photography: blending technical precision with adventurous execution. Whether capturing extreme environments like canyons or documenting documentary subjects in rugged terrain, having equipment that is both reliable and creatively empowering is critical.

Instead of relying on small-sensor action cams that often limit choice of lenses, exposure control, and image fidelity, Outex housings allowed Thibault to bring his preferred gear into demanding environments. This meant capturing stills and motion that truly reflect his artistic vision and Fujifilm’s imaging power, above and below water.

The Takeaway for Creators and Adventure Visual Storytellers

For photographers and filmmakers shooting in water-exposed conditions — from canyoning and waterfall canyons to coastal surf, river rapids, or snowy runoffs — the choice of gear directly affects what is possible creatively.

Outex housings are designed to:

  • Protect your professional camera gear without sacrificing image quality
  • Maintain optical clarity and control even in challenging lighting and moisture
  • Keep your setup lightweight, modular, and travel-ready
  • Empower creators to shoot confidently in environments where others might stay on shore

Thibault Poinas’s canyoning project with Fujifilm is just one example of how great gear choices unlock new creative directions — letting photographers focus on the story, the light, and the moment.
