Does the Outex Phone Kit Float? Buoyancy, the Dome Port, and the Wrist Strap Explained
Apr 27, 2023
Yes — the Outex Phone Kit is designed to float. The sealed housing traps air inside, which provides buoyancy. Here's how flotation works across different kit configurations, and how the included wrist strap provides a backup safety connection.
Flotation by Configuration
| Configuration | Floats? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cover + flat lens port only | Usually | Depends on phone weight and size. Slows sinking significantly even if it doesn't fully float. |
| Cover + Phone Dome 120mm | Yes — guaranteed | The dome traps enough air to float virtually any current smartphone model, including all iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel models. |
Because phones vary in shape, weight, and size, Outex cannot guarantee flotation with the flat port alone for every phone model. However, even without the dome, the trapped air inside the sealed housing will significantly slow any sinking, giving you time to retrieve the kit.
The Wrist Strap
Every Outex Phone Kit includes an adjustable looped wrist strap. The strap threads through a loop on the cover and keeps the kit securely connected to your wrist at all times — above and below water. It is the most reliable way to ensure you won't drop or lose the kit, regardless of whether your specific phone floats with the flat port configuration.
We recommend always using the wrist strap when shooting near or in water, even when using the dome port.
