Proof That Cinema Can Be Powerful in Just Minutes - "Me Enseña" Surf Film
Oct 02, 2025
🎬 Filmmaker Reagan Matthew calls short surf film "Me Enseña" a Visual Poem.
Lights dim, silence—then a soft whimper, a teaching moment, a life changing glance. Me enseña is a short film by Reagan Matthew that lingers long after the credits roll. With quiet but powerful imagery, the film explores themes of guidance, vulnerability, and human connection (though full details are still emerging). Reagan’s voice is elusive yet present throughout the short: his characters seem to teach and learn all at once.
From what little we can piece together, Me enseña is characteristic of Reagan Matthew’s style: poetic, intimate, emotionally grounded. It’s a film that asks less of spectacle and more of noticing — noticing eyes, hands, silences, small gestures. The narrative doesn’t shout; it whispers. In that whisper lies the power.
Reagan, as the creative force behind this short, bridges the roles of director, visual storyteller, and emotional choreographer. He trusts minimalism, trusting the viewer to read between frames. He pushes the camera to follow, not to lead — allowing us to inhabit the little cracks in a moment, rather than stare at grand arcs.
And so, in the span of a few minutes, Me enseña becomes a micro-universe: each cut, each hold, each breath counts.
🎥 Behind the lens: Reagan’s use of Outex
One of the unsung heroes of Me enseña is the camera system Reagan chose: Outex. He’s repeatedly praised it for exactly the kinds of qualities an indie short needs — versatility, optical quality, compatibility, full control, and portability. Here’s why he leans on it so much:
Versatility
Whether doing tight closeups, handheld work, or static compositions, the Outex rig allows Reagan to reconfigure without breaking flow. He can go from a stabilized shot to a freer, organic movement with modular adjustments. That flexibility is vital on small crews where you don’t have a dozen assistants to swap gear mid-shoot.
Optical quality
Reagan trusts Outex to preserve the clarity, contrast, and character of his lenses. He's drawn to its optical path fidelity — no weird back-focus surprises, no unintentional vignetting or color shifts. The system doesn’t “get in the way” of his visual intent; it supports it.
Compatibility
One of the biggest headaches in indie production is adapting lenses and accessories across brands. With Outex, Reagan can work with a variety of lenses, adapters, and accessories without forcing heavy re-engineering. That means if he wants to pull in a vintage lens or a specialty optic, he can do so with confidence that the system will play nice.
Full control over camera & lens functions
Outex gives Reagan mechanical and electronic control — iris, focus, zoom (if applicable), monitoring — in ways he can trust. He doesn’t have to settle for “close enough”; he can dial in exactly what he needs. Especially on shorts where you don’t have the luxury of second takes, that fine control is crucial.
Transport friendliness
When your shoot moves fast — shifting location, packing down quickly — a rig that is bulky or fragile kills momentum. Reagan loves that Outex rigs break down compactly, travel easily, and can be reassembled reliably. It doesn’t feel like you’re hauling a medieval machine; you feel like you’re carrying your creative tool.
In Reagan’s own words (paraphrased): “Outex lets me bring the best of my lenses and camera choices everywhere, without making me compromise. It doesn’t slow me down. It doesn’t corrupt my image. It simply becomes invisible — exactly what a rig should do.”
Thanks to the Outex system, Me enseña feels both delicate and resolute — delicate because of its intimate touches, and resolute because every shot feels purposeful and in control.
About the film:
The ocean never ceases to amaze me with its ability to connect, heal and teach. Shot on a whim in 2021 with strangers who would quickly become close friends, this little piece was an attempt to capture a newfound love for the sea. The process of making it left me somehow more obsessed.
